A warm welcome to all the visitors of the website of the Embassy of Portugal in Addis Ababa.

I hope it may provide useful information to the Portuguese citizens, either residents or just passing by, as well as to all those interested in Portugal and its relations with Ethiopia and with the African continent in general.

Portugal and Ethiopia’s long diplomatic relations go back as far as the XVI century when, as a result from the mission sent to Portugal by the Regent Queen Eleni, King Manuel I sent an Ambassador to the Ethiopian court. The present diplomatic mission has been established in 2002. Since then the work of my predecessors and all who have worked here, has enabled the strengthening of the bilateral relations which this year, 2020, celebrate 500 years.

Addis Ababa is also one of the most important political and diplomatic capitals, as the Headquarters of both the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa as well as the host of several United Nations specialized agencies and other international organizations. Multilateral relations are therefore one of the main pillars of the Embassy work. In our capacity as the Representation to the African Union it is our priority to closely follow the African integration process and also to develop a cooperation relation either within the European Union framework as well as in a
bilateral way, supported by shared values and interests.

Another of our priorities is the promotion of the Portuguese culture and language through its teaching at the University in Addis Ababa and at the African Union – where Portuguese is one of the organization official languages - together with the support and search of business opportunities to increase the presence of national companies in this region.

Finally I would like to emphasize that the Embassy of Portugal in Addis Ababa also follows the Portuguese relations with the Republic of Djibouti, the Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of South Sudan.

We would like to thank you for your interest in this website. Do not hesitate to contact
us with any suggestions or further information you may find useful.
